Class Policies

Should you need to cancel or reschedule a class at Urban Spools, we require 72 hours notice.  A full refund will be issued or you may request a Class Credit to be used toward another class we offer.  If a cancellation is received less than 72 hours prior to the class, no refund or Class Credit will be issued.  This allows the teachers at Urban Spools to be fully prepared for the correct number of students and to allow for time to fill the slot in classes that often have a waiting list.

This monthly clubhouse will be the meeting place to see the latest Urban Spools Block of the Month programs and more. Each month, there will be a quick demonstration for that month's block for each different block of the month quilt. For 2017, there are seven different block of the month programs and we will discuss each one separately.

You have made that first quilt top but what are the next steps to get it to sofa snuggle time? This class will teach you how to quilt that quilt top using your domestic sewing machine. This after school camp is a great way for your tween or teen to jump into the world of garment-making. We will work through multiple garment projects. The students will finish this series with completed garments, fashion illustration skills and some beginning pattern making. We will use both woven fabrics and knit fabrics in this course.

Kids After School Sewing Club is back with some fun, new projects to get their creative juices flowing!

This after school club for more advanced sewer will be focusing on projects that build on the basics. Projects will include garment, bags, stuffed animals, and quilts. Club members should have completed at least one month of level I sewing club. You can take both level I and level II as the projects will be very different.

In this five day camp, the kids will learn how to safely use a sewing machine, and start on a journey of sewing adventures that they can carry them well into adulthood. On day one, we will cover the basics of how the sewing machine works, how to thread the machine, and how to wind a bobbin. After mastering these topics, the kids will be ready to start sewing!

In this five day camp, kids who have completed earlier Urban Spools Kids classes will continue their sewing journey. These projects will be designed to grow their skill set and have some fun!

BLOW IT UP or shrink it down. Learn to take a fun block and resize it to the size of your imagination. Think how fun it would be to take a cute block and Blow it up to a bed size quilt or size it down to a mini quilt. In class you will learn to resize the scissors block from the Sewology block of the month pattern held in 2017-2018 as a block of the month at Urban Spools. Lots of tips and tricks on the fabric preparation and piecing. We will provide you a block sizing tool in excel that you can use to resize any block in your library.

This paper pieced and applique quilt will challenge your design and creation skills. Work with your favorite Urban Spools crew on fabric selection, fussy cutting and new techniques. Penelope will be setting up free shopping workshops for this class to help you through the design process.

Hidden Agenda is the perfect quilt for that very special fabric you have been collecting. With a variety of fussy cut squares, the pattern accommodates practically any fabric that you throw at it. There are large blocks for the pieces that you just cannot bare to cut into, and there are smaller blocks that let you feature moments of scenic fabrics. Hidden Agenda is perfect for panels as well.

Learn to master any Elizabeth Heartman pattern with tips and tricks taught in this class. We will be focusing on the BEEHIVE quilt pattern however, the skills taught in the cutting and piecing of this pattern will give you the tools to make it through any Elizabeth Heartman pattern. This is a great complement for our Blow it up class with Glynnis Wood.

A trinket is typically thought of as a small item of little worth. Its value comes from what it means and the memories it holds. The Trinket quilt is about the process and act of creating as you connect personal meaning to each block. The fun is in the making! Trinket uses the foundation paper piecing technique. It includes templates for 40 different 4 inch blocks and detailed foundation paper piecing instructions. This 4 part class will focus on fabric choice, layout, craft and creation. The 5th saturday of the month is always special because we have our sale event. However, to up the ante just a bit we have introduced the 5th saturday rockstar challange. This challange runs simmular to most reality TV, think of it as the ?Chopped? for your favorite quilt store. You come in and will be given a random bag of supplies and a theme. You will have 6 hours to create a finished product based on the theme of the month. The winner will be posted on instagram and win the cost of the challange in a store gift card.

Bring your applique, english paper piecing, hand piecing, Dear Jane, La Pascagalia, embroidery projects and Penelope will be on hand to help you complete those projects. Penelope loves all forms of hand stitching and has loads of experience. Come hang out, make new friends and learn the joys of slow stitching.
