Class Policies

Should you need to cancel or reschedule a class at Urban Spools, we require 72 hours notice.  A full refund will be issued or you may request a Class Credit to be used toward another class we offer.  If a cancellation is received less than 72 hours prior to the class, no refund or Class Credit will be issued.  This allows the teachers at Urban Spools to be fully prepared for the correct number of students and to allow for time to fill the slot in classes that often have a waiting list.

Exercise your interior design muscles by learning how to make curtains for the windows in your room. This class provides you an actual tabletop window to dress in two styles, tab top, and rod pocket. After this class you will be able to go home and calculate how much fabric to measure, cut and hem for your specific window.

Join us for this class and make a beautiful table topper with several different fabrics and beautiful stitches all on your home embroidery machine. We are making a table topper to be the foundation for a festive centerpiece while boosting your embroidery skills.

Sashiko handwork is a form of Japanese needlework known for its beautiful and yet simple geometric patterns. We'll help you get started in creating this decorative running stitch technique.

Once you have conquered the Intro to Hand Sashiko class, bring your needles and let's learn curves. Curved sashiko is a variation on the first technique and can be daunting. But we will take the fear out of it and share tips that make it easier. We will use preprinted fabric to make a lovely pillow and talk about ways to mark fabrics and make your own designs.

This bag is a box style with extra wide straps, a magnetic snap and laminated cotton on the inside. The laminated cotton allows you to use this tote in many ways including a work bag to carry a laptop and lunch or a pool bag to carry wet bathing suits. In this class you will get into the details of a garment sewing pattern. You will learn the differences between pattern styles, what the pattern markings mean and how to transfer them onto your fabric all while sewing your first pair of boxer shorts.

We are using the Tamarack Jacket pattern by Grainline Studio that comes in sizes 00-30. In addition to this pattern being size inclusive, it is also unisex and open to everyone! This is the perfect class for a Student that has just finished the Intro to Garment Series and is ready to create a garment with the goal to get exactly what you want in your top. This pattern lets you choose with a keyhole or not, short sleeves or 3/4 sleeves, solid or with color blocking. Longarm quilting machines opens up worlds of possibilities. With a larger workspace, quilters gain complete control over their compositions from beginning to end. The built-in stitch regulator ensures smooth, precise stitching for a harmonious finish. In this class, you will learn the basics of longarm quilting, how to properly load a quilt, thread the machine, adjust tensions, and operating the machine using several different free-motion quilting techniques.

Add your own unique touch to every project with your embroidery machine. In this class, you will learn how to select the proper stabilizer for each project, hooping techniques, thread differences, and basic embroidery digitizing methods. You will also get to practice these techniques while making a simple hand towel embroidery project. Join us for Afterschool Club on Thursdays for sewing! Every month we will host 4 sessions of machine sewing fun. These sessions are for the new Sewists that want to gain or expand their skill set with interesting sewing projects all while making new friends that share the same sewing interests.

Join us afterschool three sessions a month to make exciting projects that include both sewing and machine embroidery. Each month Students will learn how to plan and execute a fun project using a variety of functions on their machines as well as learn how to determine which needle, stabilizer and thread is needed. These projects will bring the youth joy as they are able to repeat their projects at home over and over again. They will grow in acquiring skills and in acquiring friendships as they create with others.

We will use the Love, Hoppington pattern by Violet Craft to make an adorable bunny that you can then turn into a finished quilt or a seasonal pillow. The Instructor will share tips on how to get the most accuracy out of the pattern so that you can enjoy the process as well as the results.

This is the Big Easy Quilt designed by Ali & CC. It is made with the beginner quilter in mind but is for all quilters that want to show off their large print fabrics. It goes together so quickly and the more variety of fabrics the scrappier it will look. If you prefer a more controlled look then use less variety in your fat quarters prints.

Have you made a Covid quilt yet! This quilt is titled Don't Stand So Close To Me by Miss Winnie Designs with arrows that represent the 6ft social distance required during pandemic times and the mask panels that represent all the masks we made and wore. This is a socially expressive quilt that is meant to mark our times in the world right now and finishes at 52" x 72".

In this quilt the traditional churn dash block has been enlarged and stretched out to make it new again. There is added interest by linking them together and combining different sizes. They have the illusion of floating as the churn dashes come forward and recede back. Our optional kits come in different prints and colors or you can come to class and create your own from our wide range of fabrics.
