Level 1 Skills: Zippers, Hoodies, and Knit Fabrics
Working with knits is a huge step forward in garment sewing! In this classic garment sewing project, you will create a zipper hoodie make with knit fabric on a sewing machine.
In this class, we will be focusing on three garment sewing construction techniques:
- Zipper closure is a common type of garment closure that uses interlocking teeth to keep the garment closed. There are several types of zippers used in garment sewing, including coil, invisible, and separating. In this class, we will be using the separating zipper which is an open-end zipper that can fully separate.
- Hoods consists of two pieces that curve together to cover the head from side to side. They can be lined or unlined and typically include a drawstring to close it up tighter to the face. For this project, we will be working with an unlined hood that is attached to the jacket body.
- Knit fabrics are made from a single continuous yarn that is looped together to create a braided appearance. These fabrics are more stretchy and flexible. For hoodies, the most common knit fabric types are jersey knit (especially cotton jersey), French terry, and fleece which offer a balance of softness, stretch, and warmth. In this class, we will learn tips and tricks on how to sew on our sewing machine with heavier weight knit fabrics.
We will review the pattern, practice working with heavier weight knit fabrics and then apply these techniques to our pattern. The pattern selected for this class is unisex to fit sizes 2XS - 4XL.
PLEASE NOTE: Not all sewing machines are able to handle heavyweight knit fabrics! If you do not own a sewing machine or need a stronger machine for this project, we have the Baby Lock Presto II sewing machine available for use.

| Materials Included: | Heavyweight Knit fabric, the pattern needed for this class, and heavyweight knit fabric samples are included in the kit price and will be provided on the day of your class. Additional materials needed for the second session of this class:
Shopping time will be provided in the first session for all additional materials that will be needed. We recommend budgeting $50. |
