Level 1 Skills: Gathering, French Seams, and Button Plackets
In this Level 1 Skill Builder Project, you will construct a garment that includes gathered sleeves for a puff effect, French seams for beautiful seams inside and out, and a button placket where you'll learn how to make buttonholes and sew in buttons on a sewing machine.
In this class, we will be focusing on three garment sewing construction techniques:
- Gathered seams is a sewing technique that create fullness and puffed / ruffled edges. This technique is common in garment construction, especially at the waistline, sleeve cuffs, and shoulder seams.
- French seams is a sewing technique that encases raw seam edges to create a clean, durable finish. This technique is common in garment construction for a more polished look instead of overcast stitching.
- Button placket is a finished opening for placement of fasteners (buttons, hooks, press studs) to be sewn to it. We will be focused on button and buttonhole placement on a sewing machine for this class.
We will review the pattern, practice each construction technique on muslin fabric and then apply these techniques to our pattern. The pattern selected for this class is designed to fit women's sizes 00 - 30.
If you do not own a sewing machine, we have the Baby Lock Presto II sewing machine available for use.

| Skill Details: | Ages 15+ Must have a working knowledge of how to operate a sewing machine. Must understand how to take accurate body measurements and read and cut out a pattern. | Materials Included: | Mulsin test fabric and the pattern needed for this class are included in the kit price and will be provided on the day of your class. Additional materials needed for the second session of this class:
Shopping time will be provided in the first session for all additional materials that will be needed. We recommend budgeting $50. |

Urban Spools is Moving!
