Level 1 Skills: Invisible Zipper, Topstitch Seams, and Hemming Class Kit
In this Level 1 Skill Builder, construct a skirt using midweight fabrics that includes an invisible zipper, slanted pockets and topstitched seams. You will also learn how to hem the skirt to the appropriate length.
In this class, we will be focusing on three garment sewing construction techniques:
- Invisible Zipper is a type of zipper designed to be hidden within a seam, making it nearly invisible when closed. Invisible zippers are commonly used in garments like dresses, skirts, pants, and some home decor items like cushion covers to create a clean, polished look without visible stitching or hardware. This type of zipper uses an invisible zipper foot which will be provided in the classroom for the Baby Lock Presto II.
- Topstitched Seams is visible stitching on the outside of a garment and typically run parallel to the seamline. They help seams lie flat and serve as reinforcement for high-stress areas like pockets or side seams and as decoration to create visual interest.
- Midweight fabrics fall between lightweight and heavyweight fabrics, offering a balance of durability, structure, and comfort. Types include cotton twill, linen, light denim, corduroy, flannel, and velvet. In this class, we will learn tips and tricks on how to sew on our sewing machine with midweight fabrics.
We will review the pattern, practice each construction technique on midweight fabric and then apply these techniques to our pattern. The pattern selected for this class is unisex to fit sizes 2XS - 4XL.
PLEASE NOTE: Not all sewing machines are able to handle heavyweight fabrics! If you do not own a sewing machine or need a stronger machine for this project, we have the Baby Lock Presto II sewing machine available for use.

| Skill Details: | Ages 15+ Must have a working knowledge of how to operate a sewing machine. Must understand how to take accurate body measurements and read and cut out a pattern. | Materials Included: | Canvas test fabric, the pattern needed for this class, and heavyweight fabric samples are included in the kit price and will be provided on the day of your class. Additional materials needed for the second session of this class:
Shopping time will be provided in the first session for all additional materials that will be needed. We recommend budgeting $50. |

Urban Spools is Moving!
