Level 1 Skills: Elastic Waist, Pattern Fitting, and Lightweight Fabrics

In this Level 1 Skill Builder Project, you will construct a robe with lightweight fabrics and coordinating shorts with an elastic waist. You will also get started in basic pattern fitting by adjusting the length of your robe. This piece can be sewn as a duster, suitable for both day and night wear.
In this class, we will be focusing on three garment sewing construction techniques:
- Pattern Fitting is the technique of adjusting a pattern to the wearer's body. It involves measuring the wearer, comparing the measurements to the pattern's size chart, and then adjusting the pattern to achieve a better fit. You will learn how to use blue dot paper to make adjustments.
- Elastic Waist in garment sewing is a waistband made with elastic that allows the garment to stretch and pull easily. Elastic waistbands are often used in skirts, pants, and dresses.
- Lightweight fabrics are ideal for blouses, dresses, and lingerie. They can also be used for scarves and sashes. Types include chiffon, organza, lawn, voile / rayon, and cotton poplin (and more). In this class, we will learn tips and tricks on how to sew on our sewing machine with lightweight fabrics.
We will review the pattern, practice each construction technique on voile / rayon fabric and then apply these techniques to our pattern. The pattern selected for this class is designed to fit women's sizes XS - XXL.
