Intro to Sergers, Part 2: Working with Knit Fabrics

One of the primary reasons for getting a serger is to work with knit fabrics. In this two part class, you will learn how to work with jersey knit fabric on a serger to create a classic t-shirt.

In this class, you will learn how to navigate and purchase designs from WaredrobeByMe.com. We will explore various patterns and how to identify which ones are appropriate for knit fabric and which will need adjustments if you want to stitch it out in knit. In addition, you will purchase on their website the pattern for this class and how to use Adobe Acrobat to only print the size you are needing. If you opt to not purchase this pattern, we will have an oak tag version available in one size so you are able to complete the project. (PLEASE NOTE: No modifications can be made to our oak tag version!)

You will learn how to set up a 4 thread overlock stitch and a 3 thread wide cover stitch for hemming. In addition, you will learn how to use fusi-knit to help stabilize your hems and an open toe foot and fabric guide for perfect finishings. For this class, we will have a Baby Lock cover stitch set up for shared use in the classroom.

PLEASE NOTE: Our Serger classes are specifically designed for Baby Lock sergers. We will be able to provide threading instructions and applicable feet for these sergers.

  • If you own a Baby Lock serger, you will need to bring a general purpose overlock foot that is compatible with your serger model.
  • If you own a Baby Lock cover stitch, you will need to bring an open toe foot that is compatible with your serger model. If you need one available for purchase in class, please contact us so we can ensure it is in the classroom for purchase at the time of the class:
    • BL Euphoria / Accolade / Triumph: BLE8-OT
  • If you own a Baby Lock cover stitch, you will need a fabric guide that is compatible with your serger model. If you need one available for purchase in class, please contact us so we can ensure it is in the classroom for purchase at the time of the class:
    • BL Euphoria / Accolade / Triumph: BLE8-FG
  • If you own a different brand of serger, it will be your responsibility to know how to set up your serger for a 4 thread overlock stitch. We will have a cover stitch available in the classroom for shared use.

Although optional, it is encouraged you bring your own serger machine, so you are able to have hands-on practice on your machine. If you would like to use one of our floor model Baby Lock serger machines, please email us at education@urbanspools.com in advance of the class with your request.
