Level 1 Skills: Snaps, Pockets, and Heavyweight Fabrics

In this Level 1 Skill Builder Project, you will construct a canvas jacket that includes snap closures and pockets on heavyweight fabrics.
In this class, we will be focusing on three garment sewing construction techniques:
- Snap closure is a type of fastener that uses two interlocking discs that "snap" to hold two pieces of material together. Snaps are used on a wide variety of clothing and bags. This type of fastener uses specialty tools which will be provided in the classroom.
- Pockets are pouch-like openings sewn into a piece of clothing to hold small items. They can either be functional or decorative in a garment design. There are a wide variety of pocket types in garment design. For this project, we will be working with the more traditional patch pocket type.
- Heavyweight fabrics are ideal for warmth and durability. Types include flannel, corduroy, canvas, thick linen, and fleece (and more...). In this class, we will learn tips and tricks on how to sew on our sewing machine with heavyweight fabrics.
We will review the pattern, practice each construction technique on canvas fabric and then apply these techniques to our pattern. The pattern selected for this class is unisex to fit sizes 2XS - 4XL.
PLEASE NOTE: Not all sewing machines are able to handle heavyweight fabrics! If you do not own a sewing machine or need a stronger machine for this project, we have the Baby Lock Presto II sewing machine available for use.
